William (“Billy”) Stern is General Counsel at Ancestry.com, and has served in that capacity since 2009. He is responsible for all aspects of Ancestry’s legal and regulatory compliance and reporting, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, Board relations and communications. Stern was responsible for Ancestry’s initial public offering, secondary public offerings, and debt financings. He also led the legal negotiations in Ancestry’s sale to an investor group led by Permira Adviors and related debt offerings and recapitalization.
Prior to joining Ancestry, Stern was General Counsel at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (“MSLO”). He represented MSLO in a wide array of licensing transactions, SEC matters, acquisitions and general corporate matters. Prior to joining MSLO, Stern had been in private practice since 1994, with a focus on corporate and securities law. He was an associate and then Partner at Morrison & Foerster LLP prior to becoming a Principal at Fish & Richardson P.C., one of the nation’s leading intellectual property firms.
Stern was an adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where he taught a course entitled “the Business of Licensing.” He received his A.B. from Brown University, and his J.D and M.B.A. from The University of Chicago. He is admitted to practice in Utah, New York, Connecticut and Colorado.
